Plymouth to Banjul Challenge update

Continuing its support for children’s charities, Amatica was proud to sponsor one of the teams in the 2007 Plymouth to Banjul Challenge, to raising for children in Africa.

Tom and Graham Ibbotson made the 7000 km trek to Gambia, raising over £5,000 for Kids Action, a charity which helps to give destitute children and orphans in Sierra Leone and Malawi the chance of a decent start in life.

The route to Banjul took the team overland through France, Spain, Morocco, the Western Sahara, Mauritania and Senegal and into Gambia. If that wasn’t challenging enough, they had to complete the trek in a left hand drive car worth no more than £100!

Unlike the Paris to Dakar rally, on which the challenge is based, there is no official support for participants. The teams must rely on their own wit, skills and teamwork to reach their destination and overcome any obstacles along the way.

Cars are a rare but valuable commodity in the Gambia where Tom and Graham’s 1988 Renault 21 Savanna is due to be auctioned, raising even more money for Kid’s Action.
