Digital divide still exists for many communities

A lack of basic IT skills is preventing over 20% of the UK population from accessing online services. 57% of UK households now have access to the internet but despite this and the growth in broadband coverage across the UK, a lack of basic IT skills is preventing a large portion of the UK population from accessing online services.

Engaging and motivating people to adopt ICT as an integral part of their daily life is still proving difficult. Initiatives such as UK Online, which provides ICT access and support at centres across the UK, have addressed the issue of access but the skills gap remains. For those people who are socially disadvantaged, technology could provide economic and educational advantages they would not otherwise have access to. Yet without the most basic ICT skills, these opportunities remain closed.

Touchscreen kiosks, such as those offered by Amatica with touchscreen interfaces, provide an easy to use introduction to IT and online services. Many of Amatica’s local government customers have implemented kiosks, offering access to services such as housing, benefits and local information.
