Broadband connections reach 10 million

Figures released this week by telecoms regulator Ofcom reveal that there are now over 10 million broadband connections in the UK. 70,000 new connections made during the final quarter of 2005.

Despite these impressive figures, access to broadband remains concentrated in metropolitan cities and areas of high population density. Many rural areas remain saddled with slow dial-up connections to the Internet.

Amatica's chief technology officer Jenni Allen advises companies to use website analysis software to ascertain the percentage of users accessing their website using dial-up. They shouldn't assume that everyone has access to broadband. "Many city-based web agencies and designers assume that there's universal broadband access. Over-reliance on rich media and associated slow download speeds just serve to alienate dial-up users. Amatica uses efficient programming to overcome many of the limitations imposed by dial-up, which means that we're able to maintain the quality of the user experience."
