Local authority websites continuing to improve

Local authority websites are continuing to improve in terms of their content and usability says the latest edition of Better Connected, SOCITM's seventh annual survey of local authority websites.

However, some councils will struggle to meet the ODPM's 'priority outcomes' by the end of 2005. This year's report pays significant attention to the connected issues of the 'usability' and 'usage' of websites.

In October 2004, 20% of all internet users visited a council website. This amounts to around 6 million people. However, few use council sites to transact (make payments or bookings, etc.). The majority of visitors are interested in jobs. In addition, most users come to council websites indirectly via a search engine such as Google.
